Course Description
The CompEx Ex14 - Responsible Persons qualification has been developed for persons in senior supervisory roles, such as those responsible for managing staff, processes and procedures relating to potentially explosive atmospheres, electrical and non-electrical (mechanical) equipment, protective systems and installations.
What certificate will i receive?
Upon successful completion, participants will receive a CompEx Certificate of Core Competence – Ex14 Responsible Person, valid for 5 years, along with a CompEx ID card.

What is the duration of the course?
The typical course duration is 4 days (full-time), including written assessments.

What are the entry requirements?
A relevant technical qualification such as HNC or equivalent in electrical.
General understanding of relevant electrical engineering, including the ability to read and assess relevant engineering drawings.
Basic knowledge of quality assurance, including the principles of auditing, documentation control and traceability
Employer letter of endorsement stating that the candidate is, or is working towards the role of a Responsible Person/Duty Holder.
Proficiency in technical English for reading, writing, and comprehension.

What does the course cover?
The aim of this course is to provide comprehensive knowledge for individuals overseeing electrical work in hazardous (Ex) areas. The course focuses on the management, supervision, and governance responsibilities required to ensure safe installation, inspection, and maintenance of Ex equipment.
Theory Topics
Legislation, regulations, and
certification schemes (ATEX, DSEAR, IECEx, EN/IEC Ex) Fundamentals of explosive atmospheres and hazardous area
classification (gases, vapours, dusts) Explosion protection concepts – Ex d, Ex e, Ex p, Ex i, Ex t, etc. Equipment marking and certification understanding. Delegation and supervision of
personnel working in Ex areas. Requirements for equipment
selection, installation, inspection & maintenance. The course blends theoretical
instruction, case studies, documentation review, and assessment activities to
prepare participants for their role as Responsible Persons overseeing hazardous
area electrical operations.

How is the course assessed?
Written Examinations: Four assessment papers covering Ex protection concepts, equipment marking, IEC 60079 standards, equipment selection and installation requirements, and hazardous area principles (approx. 3 hours total).
