What are the entry requirements?

There are no pre-requisites for this training course. However, it is strongly recommended that learners have experience of lifting operations at supervisory level, and a good understanding of mathematics.

What does the course cover?

The aim and objectives of the training is to provide learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills to enable them to undertake the duties of an appointed person for lifting operations and plan lifts.

Course Summary

Theory Topics

To successfully pass the course, learners will be required achieve the following:

1. Demonstrate a knowledge of the legislation, regulations and standards governing the use of lifting equipment; and

2. Demonstrate a knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of personnel involved in the lifting operation; and

3. Demonstrate a knowledge of the requirements of different types of lifts; and

4. Demonstrate a knowledge of the requirements for lifting persons, lifting from height, safe access & egress; and

5. Demonstrate a knowledge of different types of cranes; and

6. Demonstrate a knowledge of lifting accessories; and

7. Demonstrate a knowledge of crane communications, such as hand signals and radios; and

8. Demonstrate a knowledge of lift planning.

Practical Topics

9. Demonstrate in teams the ability of putting theoretical knowledge into practice by conducting a live lifting operation.

How is the course assessed?

Learners will be given a written examination which will allow them to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding. The written assessment is closed book, and learners must be able to demonstrate understanding of all key learning points.

Learners practical performance will be evaluated by direct observation during a safe lifting operations.
