This course is an entry level course suitable for those looking to enter a career as a Slinger/Signaller or Rigger in the construction Industry.

NB. The term Slinger / Rigger are commonly interchanged for jobs in the Middle East and this training is focussed on lifting operations involving cranes, not portable lifting equipment.

What certificate will i receive?

Upon successful completion of the course, delegates will be awarded with a LEEA Accredited Certificate, valid for 3 years.

What can the course lead to?

LEEA accredited training can lead to a number of onshore construction sector rigging roles internationally.

Learners, after serving some time, may choose to progress to Crane Supervisor or Lift Supervisor training to progress their careers.

What is the duration of the course?

The optimum ‘contact time’ for this training programme is seen as 24 hours over 3 consecutive days.

Optimum contact time is based on the maximum number of learners attending.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no pre-requisites for this training course.

Training contains physically demanding and potentially stressful elements. All personnel who participate in such training must be medically fit and capable of participating fully. Learners must either:

1. Complete a GSS medical screening form prior to attendance.

What does the course cover?

The aim and objectives of the Lifting and Slinging training is to provide the knowledge and practical skills to enable learners to undertake the duties of a Slinger / Banksman for lifting operations.

The employment of a competent person to conduct slinging operations is an important role within lifting operations. Poor slinging is a contributory cause of crane accidents, which result not only in significant damage to plant, but also in severe injury to those doing the work or those nearby.

Training enables suitable employees to learn the basic elements of lifting operations. After training, candidates ought to work under the supervision of an experienced slinger until their employer has assessed them as competent to perform their duties.

Course Summary

Theory Topics (PART A)

To successfully pass the course, students will be required to achieve the following:

1. Demonstrate a knowledge of the legislation, regulations and standards governing the use of lifting equipment

2. Demonstrate a knowledge of Force Influences & Rating Methods

3. Demonstrate how to Estimate Loads

4. Demonstrate how to find Centre of Gravity of Loads

Theory Topics (PART B)

5. Demonstrate a knowledge of different types of slings and how to carry out a pre-use check

6. Demonstrate a knowledge of different types of lifting accessories and how to carry out a pre-use check

Practical Topics (PART C)

7. Demonstrate a knowledge of how to understand and follow a simple lift plan

8. Demonstrate a knowledge of crane signals in accordance with BS 7121

9. Practical Assessment

- Lifts include:

001. Steel Beam

002. Bundled Scaffold Tubes

003. Offset COG Large Pipe Erray

004. AC Unit / CCU / Skip

If time permits, a range of additional lifts are available for practice.

How is the course assessed?

Learners will be given a written examination which will allow them to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding. The written assessment is closed book, and students must be able to demonstrate understanding of all key learning points.

Learners practical performance will be evaluated by direct observation during a safe lifting operations.
