The target group for Banksman and Slinger Competence Assessment are personnel that wish to become OPITO-certified competent banksman and slingers - having successfully completed the OPITO Banksman and Slinger Initial Training Standard and Banksman and Slinger Workplace Experience Logbook or possess sufficient and relevant work experience to be eligible for the OPITO Banksman and slinger Competence assessment.

Upon successful completion of the course learners will be awarded with a OPITO Approved Certificate, valid for 2 years.

Certificates can be verified through our website or through the OPITO Vantage System and TRAIN-R App.

What can the course lead to?

Following the Banksman & Slinger Competence Assessment, candidates can progress to attend OPITO Lift Planning Training, and with suitable time and experience, OPITO LOLER Competent Person.

OPITO approved training is the global standard for the energy sector. Certification is valid globally, in industries such as oil and gas and renewables and, in combination with other certificated training, can lead to a number of roles.

What is the duration of the course?

The optimum ‘contact time’ for this training programme is seen as 7 hours over 1 days.

Optimum contact time is based on the maximum number of learners attending.


What are the entry requirements?

Option 1

(a) An OPITO-approved Banksman and Slinger Initial Training Certificate awarded within the previous 32 months.

And

(b) ) A fully completed and valid OPITO Banksman and Slinger Workplace Experience Logbook and supporting evidence for each of the 57 tasks*, such as a copy of the lifting plan, permit or toolbox talk, based on the OPITO Banksman and Slinger Initial Training Standard and Banksman and Slinger Workplace Experience Logbook requirements. The logbook must be signed as true and valid by the employing company head of discipline or the employing company discipline manager and confirmed by the Centre as being present and correct prior to assessment taking place.

*Supporting evidence is not required for candidates who completed the Initial Training Standard (previously Stage 1) between February 29th, 2020, and February 28th, 2022.

or

(c) If a candidate completed the Initial Training Standard (previously Stage 1) between February 29th, 2020, and February 28th, 2022 and does not have a completed Workplace Experience Logbook, a formal letter from a current employer, meeting the below criteria, may be accepted. Contact GSS for the letter template.

Option 2

(d) An OPITO Approved Banksman and Slinger Competence Assessment or Re-Assessment Certificate awarded within the previous 30 months.

Option 3

(e) Evidence that they have been assessed as competent and have achieved an equivalent qualification/certification by a nationally recognised awarding body, awarded within the previous 30 months.

Medical Requirements

Training activities contained within this product may include physically demanding and potentially stressful elements. All personnel who participate in such activities must be capable of participating fully. As a minimum, to ensure that prior to participating in practical exercises the candidate is declared fit, in that they:

1.Possess an employing company approved medical certificate equivalent to an offshore medical certificate; or

2.Undergo medical screening by completing an appropriate medical screening form provided by GSS.

What does the course cover?

The aim and objectives of the Banksman and Slinger assessment are to establish that the candidate has the required underpinning knowledge, understanding and practical skills to fulfill the role of Banksman and Slinger safely and effectively.

Course Summary

Unit OIS 243: Direct and Control the Movement and Placing of Loads (Theory)

Outcome 1: Direct and Control the Movement and Placing of Loads

Unit OIS 244: Direct and Control the Movement and Placing of Loads (Practical)

The Banksman will performance the following lift types:

1) A simple pre-slung lift

2) A bundled tubular lift

3) A restricted access lift

4) A lift in which the load has an offset centre gravity

5) A blind lift

Outcome 1: Direct and Control the Movement and Placing of Loads

Unit OIS 284: Prepare and Sling Loads (Theory)

Outcome 1: Preparation and Slinging of Loads

Unit OIS 285: Prepare and Sling Loads (Practical)

Outcome 1: Preparation and Slinging of Loads

The Slinger will be required to sling the following loads:

1) Prepare and sling a simple lift (not pre-slung)

2) Prepare and sling a bundle of 3 or more tubulars

3) Prepare and sling a load with an offset centre of gravity

4) Prepare and sling a load using manmade fibre slings



How is the course assessed?

Candidates will be assessed against the theory outcomes through a written test.

Candidates will be assessed against the practical criteria, through observation of them completing a series practical lifts.
