OPITO Approved - Confined Space Entry

Course Description

This course is designed for personnel across the energy sector with an existing theoretical understanding and awareness of Confined Spaces*, associated hazards and guidance and require the corresponding practical skills necessary for entry into a confined space.

Why choose this course?

There are two parts to this training programme – Theoretical and practical training:

1) The theoretical elements delivered in a classroom. Delegates will be assessed against Learning outcomes 1-13 using a short written test, open-book test.

2) The practical elements of the training will consist of a series of explanations and demonstrations by training staff followed by delegates practicing and demonstrating their competence during a practical driving session. Learning outcomes 14 and 15 will be assessed through direct observation of the delegate’s practical performance.

Delegates will drive a prescribed route determined by the assessor in order to demonstrate competence over the range of variables described in Module 3. The assessor may request a three minute commentary drive from each delegate during the assessment as long as they take into account the delegate’s language skills.

Who is the course for?

This course is designed for personnel across the energy sector with an existing theoretical understanding and awareness of Confined Spaces*, associated hazards and guidance and require the corresponding practical skills necessary for entry into a confined space.

What certificate will i receive?

Learners must hold a valid OPITO Approved Confined Space Awareness certificate.

What can the course lead to?

This course covers knowledge of how confined spaces are defined and recognised, the specific regulations and guidelines, hazards, control measures, roles and responsibilities and testing and to instruct and assess delegates on the practical skills necessary for confined space entry including testing/use of appropriate PPE and emergency escape equipment. The objectives of the Confined Space Awareness are that learners will be able to understand: a) Atmospheric testing through correct operation of monitoring equipment b) Hazard identification and dynamic risk assessment c) Pre use PPE and Equipment checks d) Don and use of full SCBA e) Donning & operating (including checks) an escape breathing apparatus (EBA) with a mask and hood prior to egress from a confined space. f) Using a pressurised cascade breathing system with an activated EBA. g) Establish and check lines of communication h) Entry and Egress to and from a confined space i) Egress from a confined space in an emergency situation.

What is the duration of the course?

Unit OIS 287: Confined Space Entry Outcome 1. Atmospheric testing through correct operation of monitoring equipment. Outcome 2. Hazard identification and dynamic risk assessment. Outcome 3: Pre use PPE and Equipment checks Outcome 4: Don and use of full SCBA Outcome 5: Donning & operating (including checks) an escape breathing apparatus (EBA) with a mask and hood prior to egress from a confined space Outcome 6: Using a pressurised cascade breathing system with an activated EBA. Outcome 7: Establish and check lines of communication. Outcome 8: Entry and Egress to and from a confined space (scenario-based activity(s)). Outcome 9: Egress from a confined space in an emergency situation (scenario-based activity(s)).

What are the entry requirements?

Learners will be required to undertake a written test to confirm knowledge and understanding, and perform a series of practical exercises to demonstrate their skills, entering and operating in a confined space.

What does the course cover?

Upon successful completion of the course learners will be awarded with a OPITO Approved Certificate, valid for 3 years.

Certificates can be verified through our website or through the OPITO Vantage System and TRAIN-R App.

Course Summary

OPITO Approved training is the global standard for training in the oil and gas sector. This training can supplement training for a number of careers. Learners can progress to confined space entry training once this course is completed. Visit www.gss-training.com for more information.

How is the course assessed?

The optimum ‘contact time’ for this course is seen as 7 hours over 1 day.

Optimum contact time is based on the maximum number of candidates attending.
