Course Description

This assessment is for personnel who have been recommended to take on the LCP role by their sponsoring company and are required to be assessed (or re-assessed) against the competence assessment criteria for LOLER Competent Person.

What certificate will i receive?

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be awarded with a OPITO Approved Certificate, valid for 2 years.

Certificates can be verified through our website or through the OPITO Vantage System and TRAIN-R App.

What is the duration of the course?

The optimum ‘contact time’ for this training programme is seen as 14 hours over 2 days.

Optimum contact time is based on the maximum number of learners attending.

What are the entry requirements?

It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that candidates are ready to be assessed. Candidates for competence assessment require:

a) Suitable and relevant experience in both crane operations and hoisting and lifting operations involving the use of portable lifting equipment

b) A formal letter from the current employer on company letterhead recommending the candidate for LCP assessment confirming his/her relevant lifting operations knowledge and experience (refer to (c) below) and supervisory experience.

c) Knowledge and experience of:

(1) LOLER, PUWER and HASAWA regulations, or the relevant regulations and legislation in the country of operations*

(2) Safe Systems of Work

(3) Assessment of personnel

(4) Management of personnel

(5) The inspection of lifting equipment and the concept of discard criteria

(6) Safe use of lifting equipment

(7) The management of rigging lofts

(8) The planning of lifting operations

(9) Risk assessment

Note to Employers.

There may be occasions when it is deemed appropriate for candidates to undertake a revision course prior to assessment to refresh their knowledge of the regulations.

*NB. Current legislation that is covered in the assessment, can be selected from the UK, India, Qatar and Ghana. Please notify us prior to assessment if your wish us to include relevant regulations and legislation from your country of operations.

Training and/or assessment activities contained within this Product may include physically demanding and potentially stressful elements. All personnel who participate in such activities must be capable of participating fully.

Therefore, OPITO-approved Centres are required, to ensure that prior to participating in practical exercises the learner undergoes medical screening by completing an appropriate medical screening form provided by the OPITO-approved Centre.

What does the course cover?

This assessment is to establish that the candidate has the required underpinning knowledge, understanding and practical skills to undertake the role as a LOLER Competent Person/ LOLER Focal Point at the workplace.

Outcome 1: Regulations and SSOW

Outcome 2: Principles and Practice of Coaching and Mentoring Lifting Personnel

Outcome 3: Supervision of Lifting Personnel roles and responsibilities

OIS-204 Selection and control of the lifting equipment and planning the lifting operation

Outome 1: How to Inspect and use lifting equipment safely

Outcome 2: How to plan the lifting operation and prepare the risk assessment

Outcome 3: Planning the lifting operation and preparing the risk assessment

How is the course assessed?

Candidates will be required to undertake a 60 minute Professional Discussion, and written examination with a LOLER CP Assessor, where they will discuss and demonstrate their knowledge.

Candidates will be assessed through observation of the candidate developing a lift plan, and delivering a toolbox talk, will be used.
