Course Description

The OPITO-approved Offshore Crane Operator Stage 3 Competence Assessment is a 1-day workplace assessment conducted at the client site. The assessment is intended for crane operators that wish to become OPITO-approved Stage 3 offshore crane operators, and hold no previous Stage 3 assessment certification.

For individuals holding existing OPITO or industry-recognized non-OPITO Stage 3 certification, such as Sparrows, Enermech, ABS, BV etc. you may be eligible for reassessment. Speak with one of our learning advisors before booking.

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be awarded with an OPITO Approved Certificate, valid for 2 years.

What is the duration of the course?

The optimum ‘contact time’ for this training programme is seen as 8 hours over 1 days.

Optimum contact time is based on the maximum number of learners attending.

In the event that the assessment is disrupted, delayed due to weather and operational issues offshore, the OCO Stage 3 Assessment must be completed within one trip or hitch; the length of the trip/hitch would depend on individual company work cycles.

What are the entry requirements?

Candidates for Stage 3 OCO assessment require [ A and C] or [ B and C ] – see details below:

(a) A valid OPITO-approved OCO Stage 2 Competence Assessment certificate; or

(b) valid OCO Stage 2 or a Stage 3 industry-recognised Offshore Crane Operator competence certificate; and

Training activities contained within this Product may include physically demanding and potentially stressful elements. All personnel who participate in such activities must be capable of participating fully.

As a minimum, to ensure that prior to participating in practical exercises the learner is declared fit, in that they:

1. Possess an employing company approved medical certificate equivalent to an offshore medical certificate; or

2. Undergo medical screening by completing an appropriate medical screening form provided by GSS.

What does the course cover?

The aim and objectives of the OPITO Stage 3 OCO Competence Assessment are to establish that the candidate has the required underpinning knowledge, understanding and practical skills to fulfill the role of Stage 3 Offshore Crane Operator safely and effectively.

Assessment of candidates can be conducted on a number of cranes, and structures.

Structure Types include:

1. Fixed structures e.g. offshore platforms, jack-up rigs etc - see OPITO Product Specification 9038

2. Floating structures e.g. FPSOs and semi-submersibles. - see OPITO Product Specification 9040

3. Vessels: deployment and recovery of loads from vessels e.g. well intervention vessels and diving support vessels. - see OPITO Product Specification 9042

How is the course assessed?

Candidates will be required to undertake a 60-minute Professional Discussion, where they will discuss and demonstrate their knowledge.

Candidates will be assessed through observation of the candidate conducting a number of deck, overside, and subsea lifts.
